With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

Andrew is at rest, yet the happy warrior lives on, in each of us. Media inquiries: jpollak@breitbart.com

Andrew was our Sam Adams

The untimely death of my friend Andrew Breitbart last week got me thinking about what an extraordinary contribution he had made to our country and to the cause of freedom in his forty-three years.  Reflecting on Andrew’s visionary, colorful and usually combative leadership conjured up a favorable comparison to another patriot from an no-less-critical time in our nation’s history: Samuel Adams.

I sought the counsel of J. Michael Waller, a scholar and professor on the art of political influence who prominently features Sam Adams in his courses at the Institute of World Politics as one of the earliest and most effective of American practitioners of that art.  Dr. Waller confirmed my sense that there were extraordinary similarities between these two towering figures.

For one thing, neither the original Samuel Adams nor our time’s version were troubled by the prospect that their stances were seen as extreme by some.  What mattered to both Adams and Breitbart was being right, particularly if it entailed challenging those in government who abused their power and standing up for the common man.

Both men relished a good fight.  Samuel Adams and Andrew Breitbart were instigators who could appeal to and mobilize the masses with effective and often pathbreaking use of the communications instruments of the day.

Interestingly, as Dr. Waller observes, “It was Samuel Adams who organized the Sons of Liberty and the rough men of the waterfront to dump the tea into Boston harbor that night in December 1773, fueling a tea party movement across the colonies, as far south as Charleston, South Carolina.”  Andrew Breitbart played a similarly catalytic role in encouraging and amplifying that movement’s counterpart in our era.

Michael Waller admiringly makes another parallel between these two, larger-than-life figures.  Like Samuel Adams, Andrew Breitbart used his role as a purveyor of information – initially as an editor for the Drudge Report and later as the driving force behind his own online media empire – to infuriate his audience and move them to action.  Like Adams, too, Andrew would seek to goad his adversaries to act, or overreact, creating new opportunities to defeat them.

For example, in 1770, Sam Adams was the first to publish the story of an incident he arguably encouraged when a Massachusetts crowd taunted British Redcoats into firing the shots he portrayed as the Boston Massacre.  Andrew Brietbart similarly inspired or stage-managed exposés of outrageous misconduct by President Obama’s favorite community organizers at ACORN, the Agriculture Department’s Pigford scandal, NPR’s willingness to take money from the Muslim Brotherhood and Anthony Weiner’s moral turpitude.  All were designed to put a withering spotlight on and upend the established order – and compel action to correct its corruption and venality.

Andrew’s network of websites – Big Hollywood, Big Government, Big Journalism and Big Peace – served as a latter day, electronic equivalent to Samuel Adams’ famous Committees of Correspondence.  As Dr. Waller put it, “Those were local groups of patriots who networked among themselves across Massachusetts and most of the rest of the colonies to spread news, discuss issues, plan action, coordinate their political action, and serve as an underground information dissemination network to circumvent the establishment.”

I was privileged to work with Andrew in launching his most recent “Big,” Big Peace.com.  It rapidly became a vehicle for just such collaborations by those committed to a strong America and appalled by policies espoused by Barack Obama – and, regrettably, to varying degrees, by some Republicans – that are having the effect of devastating our country’s ability to project power and deter aggression.

Sadly, unlike Sam Adams who lived to see the fruits of his efforts give birth to a new nation, Andrew Brietbart has passed on while there is still much work to be done.  While he has left behind a terrible void at a moment when a skilled, brilliant and effective political warrior is more needed than ever, Andrew’s abiding legacy will be that he helped create movements and networks that are sure to shape our future.

It falls to us to realize his vision of an America rooted in freedom, limited government and patriotic common sense – a vision he certainly shared with Samuel Adams.

Obama makes the case for an Israeli strike on Iran

In his commentary in Maariv’s Friday news supplement, the paper’s senior diplomatic commentator Ben Caspit laid out a hypothetical lecture that Obama might give Netanyahu when the two leaders meet alone in the Oval Office this afternoon. In Caspit’s scenario, Obama used the one-on-one to set out the law to the Israeli premier. If you bomb Iran’s nuclear installations before the November elections, in my second term Israel will no longer be able to buy spare parts for its weapons systems from the US. So too, Caspit’s Obama said, the US will end its support for Israel at the UN Security Council if Israel dares to take it upon itself to prevent Iran from crossing the nuclear threshold before the US elections.

Perhaps Caspit wrote his article after hearing about a meeting between American Jews and Vice President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor Anthony Blinken. According to Commentary’s Omri Ceren, Blinken told the assembled Jews that if Israel’s supporters discuss Obama’s hostile treatment of Israel in the context of the election, they can expect to suffer consequences if Obama is reelected.

It is important to keep Blinken’s threats and Caspit’s scenario in mind when considering Obama’s speech to AIPAC on Sunday morning.

Obama’s speech was notable for a number of reasons. First, this was the first speech on an Israel related theme that Obama has given since the 2008 campaign in which he did not pick a fight with Israel. And it is due to the absence of open hostility in his address that Obama’s supporters are touting it as a pro-Israel speech.

While he didn’t pick a fight with Israel on Sunday, his speech did mark a clear attempt to undermine Israel’s strategic position in a fundamental – indeed existential – way. As many commentators have noted in recent weeks, Israel and the US have different red lines for the Iranian nuclear program. These divergent red lines owe to the fact that the US has more options for attacking Iran’s nuclear installations than Israel.

From Israel’s perspective, Iran’s nuclear program will reportedly become unstoppable as soon as the Iranians move a sufficient quantity of enriched uranium and/or centrifuges to the Fordow nuclear installation by Qom. Since Israel reportedly lacks the ability to destroy the facility, Israel’s timeline for attacking Iran will likely end within weeks. The US reportedly has the capacity to successfully bomb Fordow and so its timeline for attacking Iran is longer than Israel’s.

The reason this is important is because it tells us the true nature of Obama’s demand that Israel give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work. When one recognizes Israel’s short timeline for attacking, one realizes that when Obama demands that Israel give several more months for sanctions to work, what he is actually demanding is for Israel to place its survival in his hands. Again, once Iran’s nuclear project is immune from an Israeli strike Obama will effectively hold the key to Israel’s survival. Israel will be completely at his mercy.

To understand just how dangerous this would be it is worth considering the other issues Obama covered in his speech. Obama’s speech essentially boiled down to three assertions, which he argued prove that he is the best friend Israel has ever had and therefore can be trusted to ensure its survival.

First, Obama asserted that military cooperation between Israel and the US has grown to unprecedented levels under his leadership. Second he claimed that his administration has served as Israel’s stalwart defender in the UN and generally when it comes to the Palestinian issue. Finally, he argued that he can be trusted to defend Israel from a nuclear armed Iran because of the sanctions that have been imposed on Iran by the US and the international community since he entered office.

The alleged expansion of US-Israel military cooperation under Obama’s watch has served as a regular talking point for Obama administration officials. The claim is convenient because it is based on classified information unavailable to the general public. You and I have no way of knowing if it is true.

But what we do know is that under Obama’s leadership, senior US military and defense officials have made repeated statements that are openly hostile to Israel. Then defense secretary Robert Gates called Israel “an ungrateful ally.” Current Defense Secretary Leon Panetta demanded that Israel “get back to the damned table” with the Palestinians. General Dempsey and his predecessor Michael Mullen have spoken disparagingly of Israel and its military capabilities and so, at a minimum gave comfort to its enemies.

Aside from these rather uncooperative comments, under Obama the US has adopted policies and taken actions that have endangered Israel militarily on all fronts and in fundamental ways. With Obama at the helm the US not only stood back and allowed Hezbollah and Iran to take over Lebanon. The US has continued to supply the Hezbollah-controlled Lebanese military with sophisticated US arms.

Under Obama, the US intervened in Egypt’s internal politics to empower the Muslim Brotherhood and overthrow Hosni Mubarak. The transformation of Israel’s border with Egypt from a peaceful border to a hostile one is the direct consequence of the US-supported overthrow of Mubarak and the US-supported rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists. These are indisputable facts. Their military repercussions are enormous and entirely negative.

Then there is Syria. For more than six months, Obama effectively sided with Bashar Assad against his own people who rose up against him. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Assad a reformer. Now, as Assad butchers his people by the thousands, the US has still failed to send even humanitarian aid to the Syrian people. Almost unbelievably, Clinton said that Assad would have to agree to any US assistance to the people who seek his overthrow.

There have been reports that the US has warned Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Saudi Arabia about the possibility that Assad’s ballistic missiles and chemical and biological arsenals may be transferred to terrorists. Such a prospect constitutes a clear and present danger to US national security – as well as Israel’s national security. Indeed, the threat of proliferation of WMD is so dangerous that the administration could be expected to take preemptive steps to destroy or commandeer those arsenals. Certainly it could be expected to support an Israeli operation to do so. But according to reports, Obama has sufficed with empty warnings to the Arabs – not Israel – that this could perhaps be a problem.

By failing to act against Assad, the Obama administration is effectively acting as the guardian of Iran’s most important regional ally. That is, far from enhancing Israel’s military posture, Obama’s behavior towards Syria is enhancing Iran’s military posture. He is acting in a manner one would expect Iran’s ally to behave, not in the manner that one would expect Israel’s ally to behave.

As to Iran, while Obama touts the new anti-Iran sanctions that have been imposed since he took office as proof that he can be trusted to take action against Iran, the fact is that Obama has been forced to implement sanctions against his will by the US Congress and Europe. So too, Obama still refuses to implement the sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank that Congress passed against his strong objections earlier in the year. As with the case of Syria – and Hezbollah in Lebanon – on the issue of sanctions, Obama’s behavior has served to help rather than hinder Iran’s pursuit of nuclear capabilities.

Beyond Israel’s immediate borders, and beyond Iran, Obama’s behavior towards Turkey has had a destructive impact on Israel’s military position and strategic posture. Obama has said that Turkey’s Islamist, anti-Semitic Prime Minister Recip Erdogan is one of the five foreign leaders he is closest to. He reportedly speaks to Erdogan at least once a week. The Turkish leader is the Middle Eastern leader that Obama trusts the most.

Erdogan gained Obama’s trust at the same time that he ended his country’s strategic alliance with Israel and began directly funding the Hamas terrorist organization and providing aid and comfort to Hamas by seeking to end Israel’s lawful maritime blockade of Gaza’s coastline.

What is notable about Obama’s relationship with NATO member Turkey is that he has not used his relationship with Erdogan to influence Erdogan’s behavior. Instead he has rewarded Erdogan’s behavior.

Obama’s self-congratulatory statements about US assistance to the development of Israel’s missile defense systems ring depressingly hollow for two main reasons. First, the military cooperation agreement between Israel and the US for the development of the Iron Dome anti-mortar and rocket shield was concluded and financed under President George W. Bush due to the peripatetic actions of Senator Mark Kirk. Obama inherited the program. And in his 2012 budget, Obama reduced US funding of the project.

The second reason his statements ring hollow is because his actions as President have increased Israel’s need to defend itself from Palestinian mortars and rockets from Gaza. Obama has empowered the Palestinians to attack Israel at will and pressured Israel to take no offensive steps to reduce the Palestinians’ ability to attack them.

This brings us to Obama’s statements about his support for Israel at the UN and towards the Palestinians. The fact is that it is Obama’s hostile position towards Israel that fuelled the Palestinians’ rejection of negotiations with Israel. As Mahmoud Abbas told the Washington Post’s Jckson Diehl, Obama’s demand for a Jewish building freeze convinced him that he has no reason to hold talks with Israel.

Then there is his “support” for Israel at the UN. The fact is that the Palestinians only sought a UN Security Council resolution condemning Jewish construction in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria because Obama made them think that he would support it. It was Obama after all who called Israeli settlements “illegitimate,” and demanded an abrogation of Jewish building rights outside the armistice lines.

The same is the case with the Palestinian decision to have the UN accept “Palestine” as a member. In his September 2010 address to the UN General Assembly Obama called for the establishment of a Palestinian state within a year. It was his statement that made the Palestinians think the US would back their decision to abandon negotiations with Israel and turn their cause over to the UN.

So in both cases where Obama was compelled to defend Israel at the UN, Obama created the crisis that Israel was them compelled to beg him to defuse. And in both cases, he made Israel pay dearly for his protection.

The fact is that Obama’s actions and his words have made clear that Israel cannot trust him, not on Iran and not on anything. The only thing that has been consistent about his Israel policy has been its hostility. As a consequence, the only messages emanating from his administration we can trust are those telling us that if Obama is reelected, he will no longer feel constrained to hide his hatred for Israel.

What these messages make clear is that if our leaders are too weak to stand up to Obama today, we will pay a steep price for their cowardice if he wins the elections in November.

Israel ‘Shall Prevail’ If Made to Fight Iran: Peres

Israel “shall prevail” if forced to fight Iran, “an evil, cruel and morally corrupt regime” bent on controlling the Middle East, Israeli President Shimon Peres said in Washington Sunday.

His speech to a powerful pro-Israel lobby charged up the atmosphere for talks Monday between US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will tackle the perceived nuclear threat from Iran.

“Iran is an evil, cruel, morally corrupt regime. It is based on destruction, and is an affront to human dignity,” Peres told thousands of delegates at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) forum.

“Iran is the center, the sponsor, the financer of world terror. Iran is a danger to the entire world,” he said in an address that was to be followed by minutes later by a speech from Obama.

“It threatens Berlin as well as Madrid, Delhi as well as Bangkok. Not just Israel,” the veteran Israeli political leader said. Read More »

Jewish Charities Fund Antisemitic Media Matters, CAP

A full page New York Times ad by the Emergency Committee for Israel lists Jewish charities that have donated to the Center for American Progress and Media Matters, institutions which Alan Dershowitz has labeled anti-Semitic. This ad may open a window into Jewish philanthropy, exposing how liberals of the Jewish faith use local charities to mask their donations to these controversial groups while also reaping other benefits.

Why are four Jewish community philanthropic foundations supporting an antisemitic website? Prof. Alan Dershowitz has brought appropriate attention to the antisemitism of Media Matters for America, and now thanks to the Daily Caller, it has been revealed that Media Matters has been receiving contributions from the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, Inc; Community Foundation of United Federation of San Diego*; Jewish Communal Fund; Jewish Community Foundation of Cleveland. Read more.

As pointed out at the Washington Free Beacon, many such charities are “donor-advised,” allowing a donor to direct funding, while remaining anonymous. At the same time and in keeping with the spirit of the Tree of Life Award, donor’s reputations would garner some measure of benefit from significant donations to local Jewish charity organizations in this manner. Jewish communities have long valued community-based charity, traditionally focused on fighting poverty within the Jewish community in question. In essence, some anonymous funds are likely being directed away from the community, while allowing the donor to benefit from the prestige community-based philanthropy can bring among one’s peers. 4-Mar-12 World View: Syria’s Al-Assad Continues to Defy the Outside World

Vladimir Putin poised to win Sunday’s presidential election

Vladimir Putin
Vladimir Putin

Opinion polls show that Vladimir Putin is likely to win more than 50% of the vote in presidential elections Sunday, returning him to the presidency of Russia without even requiring a runoff election. Putin was president for two terms, from 2002-2008, but was barred from running for a third consecutive term by the Russian constitution. So he arranged for Dmitry Medvedev to become president, while he became prime minister. Now the game is about to come full circle, as Putin becomes president again. However, it’s widely believed among the Russian people that Putin’s party won the December parliamentary elections through massive election fraud, and it’s widely expected that Sunday’s vote will be fraudulent again. Syria’s al-Assad continues to defy the outside world

Middle East expert Fouad Ajami of the Hoover Institution says that Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad may be declaring victory. He’s defied the outside world by continuing to exterminate his own people, with nobody able to stop him. By now, the Syrian people must know that nobody is coming to their rescue. According to Ajami:

“I think you have to give credit where credit is due to the killer in Damascus. Unlike Gaddafi, who was insane, and who said things in a brazen way, the man in Damascus kills, but he also has a referendum, so he still is faking out the international community. He is less newsworthy, if you will, than Muammar Gaddafi. Muammar Gaddafi’s insanity made him better copy. Muammar Gaddafi minced no words and said he was coming to kill the people in Benghazi, while Bashar says, as he kills them in Bab al Amr, he’s offering a referendum.”

Judge Martin, Sharia, and Islamic Kadi ‘Justice’

Judge Mark Martin—now infamous for presiding over the “Zombie Muhammadcase—was incorrectly identified by me as a self-professed Muslim, based upon a faulty audio recording of the court proceedings (see blogs here and here by Andrew C. McCarthy for the audio sleuthing, and clarification).

Nevertheless, the salient points remain: Martin’s alarming deference to Islam’s Sharia-based understanding of blasphemy—a non-existent “crime” in American constitutional law—and his concurrent warped misinterpretation of the First Amendment led him to behave as a de facto, albeit non-Muslim, kadi.

The “Zombie Muhammad” which sparked the case decided by Judge Martin

Moreover, before ever again belching forth uninformed, pious platitudes about Islam in his court room, I suggest Judge Martin read and ponder this sobering account written by Col. Felix A. Mathews, July 20, 1879. Mathews was an American consul to Morocco, serving in Tangier, from 1869-1893. What follows are extracts from Mathews’ unsparing analysis of the Sharia—Islam’s religio-political quintessence—and the consequences of its administration as “law,” based upon his intimate firsthand experience, after an entire decade in residence.

There is no code of laws in the Empire of Morocco, but instead of a civil they have a religious code. The practice of jurisprudence is reduced to the application of certain principles to be found in the Koran, and is the practical knowledge of the precedents established in the various jurisdictions. There are kadis and governors in the cities and countries for the administration of justice and notaries or talbes to certify deeds, and all which relates to the security of property. The laws of the Koran admit no evidence but from those professing the Mohammedan religion. [Parenthetical note: One could argue Judge Martin, assuming the role of de facto Kadi, did nearly the same in rejecting the video evidence of the atheist plaintiff!] Read More »

Probe: Korans Placed in Trash by Soldiers, Inadvertently Burned by Afghan Workers

The Sky News headline does not tell the full story; it appears several enlisted men were directed to dispose of the Korans found to have been burned, but they were not given clear orders how to get rid of them. The actual burning was apparently begun by Afghans manning the pit. You have to read far down in the linked story to read this. Emphasis mine.

US officials said several of the soldiers, who have not been publicly identified, are likely to face disciplinary proceedings.

They were not told to burn the books, although it’s unclear how they were supposed to dispose of Muslim texts. ‘There were crossed wires,’ said one official familiar with the investigation. ‘There’s no indication this was a deliberate attempt to defile religious materials.’

Afghan workers at the burn pit spotted several Korans in the flames and ’started getting riled up’ over the desecration of holy books, another official said. The workers pulled several charred books from the fire and told other Afghans, igniting widespread outrage.

There’s no explanation as to why the Afghans manning the pit did not see the books prior to their beginning to burn. While it states they were not told to burn them, it’s unclear from the report that they were told how to appropriately dispose of them. Meanwhile, powerful Muslim clerics are demanding a public trial, using the threat of more violence as leverage and the Afghan government looks like it may be playing politics. Read More »

SWIFT: A New Front in Economic Sanctions on Iran

SWIFT, Society for Worldwide Interback Financial Telecommunications, is the “lubricant that the global financial system rests on.” SWIFT’s function is to allow banks to communicate with one another, allowing bank A to give permission to bank B to offer credit to an individual or company, etc. If one bank cannot communicate with other banks, then that bank and its investors are not able to move money, and this segregation from the rest of the financial sector is what is currently happening to Iranian banks. Congress has pressured SWIFT to cut off Iranian banks from the rest of the global market, but only now are they actually starting to take action. SWIFT has claimed it will only cut off the Iranian banks that have been blacklisted by the EU. Financial expert Avi Jorisch explains the impact to Iran’s economy if these banks are cut off from the rest of the world.

You can listen to Avi’s interview with Frank, and all of our guests, at Secure Freedom Radio.
